Elvin Alonso had a passion for hair. As a high school senior, he spent his free time watching YouTube videos about techniques for cutting hair.
His brother bought him some cheap $20 hair clippers. Then he took his brother and two friends into a parking lot and cut their hair. Those first attempts weren’t very good.
“My friends wouldn’t let me cut their hair again until I got better at it,” Alonso recalled.
He persisted, watching more videos and asking his barber for some tips. It was his love of the trade that set Alonso on a path that he hopes will lead from despair to success.
Alonso always struggled in school. Academics just weren’t for him. In December, the Aubrey Rogers High School senior went to Beacon, an alternative school that helps students graduate on time.
As graduation neared, Alonso knew he needed to find his future. He got help from Mary Asta, the executive director of the Garguilo Education Center in North Naples, a migrant after-school center that Alonso had attended since kindergarten.
